SITUATION
Archipelago of Kuna Yala is also known worldwide as San Blas region.
Kuna Yala is a territory governed autonomously by the indigenous Kuna people. The name means Kuna-land or Kuna Mountain in the Kuna language.
The capital of Kuna Yala is El Porvenir.
The islands of Kuna Yala are situated in the Panamanian coast of the Caribbean sea , bordering Colombia and the province of Darién. There are 365 islands.
√ We like to say that there is an island for every day of the year
OUR FLAG
The flag of Kuna Yala was adopted in 1925, and is based on a swastika design, an ancient symbol in Kuna culture that means “Los 4 vientos” (4 winds).
GASTRONOMY
The typical dish is “Tulemasi” which is a soup made with fish, plantain, coconut and other vegetables.
In Kuna Yala, you can ask for special seafood like lobsters and spider crabs.
Please, take into account that normally, from 1st March till 1st June, it is not allowed to catch lobsters, spider crabs and other kinds of seafood in order to preserve these species. That is forbidden by General Kuna Congress.
ECONOMY
Fishing is the mainstay of the traditional Kuna subsistence economy. Also once of the most important activity is tourism (islands, beaches, snorkelling tours, fishing tours, jungle tours, wird & flora watching tours…). The most tourist place in Kuna Yala is Carti Region.
Other activities are agriculture and handicrafts. The most popular handicraft is the “Mola”, what is made by Kuna’s women. “Molas” are traditional Kuna female dress.
Kuna men wear standard western clothes a and Kuna women wear gold rings in their ears and noses and blue vertical lines painted on their faces; they use molas, the tradicional dress. Molas are the most popular souvenir for visitors of Kuna Yala.
